Taking a Leap: Values and Practices for Planning an Emergent Curriculum

Taking a Leap – Part I
Presenter: Sarah Felstiner
Friday, October 23, 2020 | 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM

Though we don’t usually think of “planning” something “emergent,” in fact it takes a great deal of intention to facilitate a curriculum that is flexibly generated from the children’s own questions and pursuits. This session will offer specific examples of structures and dispositions that support a dynamic, responsive, customized curriculum for young children. We’ll examine some of the practices in use at Hilltop Children’s Center, in Seattle, and explore strategies for facilitating an emergent curriculum in participants’ own classrooms and schools. In this session, we'll consider opportunities for aligning Emergent Curriculum with key early learning principles such as Pedagogy of Listening, Reflective Practice / Critical Reflection, Collaborative Dialogue, and Pedagogical Narration.

Participants will have the opportunity to break into small groups and listen to and interact with educators at Hilltop Children's Center and gain insight into how these theories live in practice!

Taking a Leap – Part II
Saturday, October 24, 2020 | 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM

On day two, we'll build upon the principles covered the previous day and consider ways to invite and encourage families to become meaningfully engaged in our programs, and look at possible models for partnering with families in curriculum planning, documentation, and assessment, to help connect families to their children's learning, throughout the school year. In this session, we'll consider opportunities for aligning Emergent Curriculum with key early learning principles such as Pedagogy of Listening, Reflective Practice / Critical Reflection, Collaborative Dialogue, and Pedagogical Narration.

About Sarah Felstiner
"As Hilltop’s Education Director, I help guide Professional Development for Hilltop faculty, and facilitate our outreach initiatives through the Hilltop Educator Institute, which offers tours, consultation services, and public events for the Early Childhood Education community.

My training includes a B.A. in Psychology from Yale University, and an M.A. in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College. I’ve worked at Hilltop since 1995, as a classroom educator in Sunlight Room for my first 10 years, then in a variety of administrative roles, and I have served as Hilltop’s Education Director since 2009.

I’m also the parent of a Hilltop alum, and pleased to be able to bring these multiple perspectives to my work. When I’m not at Hilltop, you can probably find me reading, baking, and hanging out with my family: my husband and son, our two cats, and our hedgehog named Darius"
